Major Components of the Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program

Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS)

The EOSDIS is managed by the Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project and includes the following activities and products:

  • Science Investigator-led Processing Systems (SIPS)
    • The ESDIS Project supports data processing by providing Science Investigator-led Processing Systems (SIPS). Most of the Earth Observing System (EOS) standard products are produced at facilities under the direct control of the instrument Principal Investigators/Team Leaders (PIs/TLs) or their designees. The SIPS are geographically distributed across the United States and are generally, but not necessarily, collocated with the PIs/TLs’ Scientific Computing Facilities (SCFs). Products produced at the SIPS using investigator-provided systems and software are sent to appropriate DAACs for archival and distribution. Level 0 Data Products and Ancillary Data that begin the processing sequence are stored at the DAACs and retrieved by the SIPS.
  • Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs)
    • EOSDIS is designed as a distributed system, with major facilities at Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) located throughout the United States. These institutions are custodians of EOS mission data and ensure that data will be easily accessible to users. The EOSDIS DAACs process, archive, document, and distribute data from NASA's past and current Earth-observing satellites and field measurement programs. Acting in concert, the DAACs provide reliable, robust services to users whose needs may cross the traditional boundaries of a science discipline, while continuing to support the particular needs of users within the discipline communities. User services include:

      • Access to data-handling and visualization tools
      • Notification of data-related news
      • Technical support and referrals

  • Earth Science Data System Working Group (ESDSWG)
    • The Earth Science Data System Working Groups (ESDSWG) is a NASA organization established under the auspices of NASA Headquarters in 2004. The chartered role of the ESDSWG focuses on the exploration and development of recommendations derived from pertinent community insights of NASA's heterogeneous and distributed Earth science data systems.
    • The ESDSWG is comprised of working groups organized around key technology and information system issues. Each working group functions independently establishing their own work plans on germane data system issues and topics. The ESDSWG members are drawn from a broad range of NASA-funded science and technology projects, NASA information technology experts, affiliated contractor staff and other interested community members from academia and industry.

  • Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs)
    • NASA, through its Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS), supports the NASA Earth Science research community in providing Earth science data products and services driven by NASA’s Earth Science goals. NASA’s Earth Science Program is dedicated to advancing Earth remote sensing and pioneering the scientific use of satellite measurements to improve human understanding of our home planet in order to inform economic and policy decisions and improve operational services of benefit to the Nation. Through the Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, NASA is continuing its commitment to expand understanding the Earth system using consistent records. NASA has begun to deploy new types of sensors to provide three-dimensional profiles of Earth’s atmosphere and surface. Emphasis is placed into linking together multiple satellites into a constellation, developing the means of utilizing a multitude of data sources to form coherent time series, and facilitating the use of extensive data in the development of comprehensive Earth system models.
  • Advancing Collaborative Connections for Earth System Science (ACCESS)
    • The objective of NASA's Advancing Collaborative Connections for Earth System Science (ACCESS) Program is to enhance and improve existing components of the distributed and heterogeneous data and information systems infrastructure that support NASA's Earth science research goals.
    • ACCESS projects increase the interconnectedness and reuse of key information technology (IT) software and services in use across the broad spectrum of Earth system science investigations.
    • The ACCESS Program supports the deployment of data and information systems and services that enable the freer movement of data and information within a distributed environment of providers and users, and the exploitation of needed tools and services to aid in measurable improvements of Earth science data access and data usability.
  • Citizen Science for Earth Systems Program
    • The Citizen Science for Earth Systems Program (CSESP) is a new competitive award program implemented by NASA HQ in 2016. Two elements are involved in this program: 1) a focus on collection and analysis across Earth Science Data (ESD) focus areas; and 2) technological development and production of low-cost sensors (e.g., mobile, raspberry pi, arduino, etc.) for measurement/monitoring.
  • Science Portals
    • Science Portals comprehensively address and communicate information about the science issue in collaboration with research and analysis programs.

Continuous Evolution

Continuous Evolution

MMO continuously evolves through communications with users and a vibrant competitive research program. These activities help prioritize evolution investments as technology, user expectations and science understanding improves on annual NOT decadal time scale.

  • Data system and science products are evolved through a combination of competitive awards and strategic investments. Competitive awards provide a constant source of innovation to improve data products, advance systems and nurture interdisciplinary tools.
    • MEaSUREs, ACCESS, CSESP and Science Portal Programs
  • Sustained investments increase efficiency and interoperability of EOSDIS.
    • Infrastructure - Networks, Virtualization, Storage, Backups
    • Systems - Global Imagery Browse System, Land and Atmosphere Near-real time Capability, Common Metadata Repository
  • The Earth Science Data System Working Groups (ESDSWG) provides a forum for PIs from the competitive programs and system managers and engineers from EOSDIS to collaborate and infuse new ideas and technology cooperatively.

Significant evolutionary activities are initiated as a result of program reviews.
