EOSDIS Data News: October 19, 2018
The Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder (CALIPSO) mission team, in collaboration with NASA's Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) and HYGEOS/AERIS/ICARE Data and Services Center, announces the release of an update to the standard Level 2 light detection and ranging (lidar) data products.

NASA's Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) released the OCO-2 (Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2) Lite product version 9, containing the most recent improvements in accuracy of the column-averaged CO2 dry-air mole fraction (xCO2). The first improvement is for a sub-footprint pointing offset that introduced 1-3 ppm biases in the V8 XCO2 retrievals in areas of with rapidly changing topography. The second improvement addressed an error affecting the a priori meteorological fields used in V8 retrievals. Finally, small adjustments in the data filtering algorithms were implemented to accept a larger fraction of the converged soundings collected over dark forested regions in the Tropics and Boreal regions. This version covers the period 2014-09-06 to 2018-09-01.
GES DISC is finalizing the acquisition and public release of Version 06 of the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Precipitation Radar products. There are twenty data types, containing physical variables such as precipitation and latent heat release profiles.
NASA's Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) published the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) Tropical Overshooting Tops dataset. This dataset contains browse only data showing tropical overshooting tops derived from Meteorology Satellite (METEOSAT) and Geostationary Operational Envrionmental Satellite (GOES) satellites for the HS3 field campaign. Goals for the HS3 field campaign included assessing the relative roles of large-scale environment and storm-scale internal processes, addressing the controversial role of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) in tropical storm formation and intensification, and the role of deep convection in the inner-core region of storms. The browse only data files are available for dates between August 14, 2014 and October 3, 2014 at 15 minutes intervals in KML format.
On 12 October, NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) released map services and maps for the Last of the Wild version 3 dataset (see: http://sedac.ciesin.columbia.edu/data/collection/wildareas-v3). The dataset includes a number of satellite-derived data layers, including University of Maryland Land Cover Classification, GlobCover, nighttime lights from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP)-Operational Linescan System (OLS), and SEDAC’s Global Agricultural Lands Pasture Lands, v1 dataset.
