EOSDIS Data News: July 14, 2017


NASA's Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) ingested and published the retro-processed Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) Data Assimilation for Drought Monitoring (GRACE-DA-DM) Version 2.0 data for the conterminous US. (GRACEDADM_CLSM0125US_7D.2.0). The GRACE-DA-CM Version 2.0 data product is based on the Catchment Land Surface Model (CLSM) Fortuna 2.5 version simulation that was created by the Land Information System (LIS) data assimilation framework, using the latest gridded GRACE solutions of the University of Texas at 0.5 degree resolution.

GES DISC released to the public the NO2 and SO2 Level 2 products (version 2 OMPS_NPP_NM_L2 and OMPS_NPP_NM_L3_DAILY) from the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Nadir Mapper instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. OMPS data are available from November 13, 2011 to the present.


NASA's Global Hydrology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has published two datasets from the Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation (GPM-GV) program.

  • GPM-GV Micro Rain Radar (MRR) Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) dataset. This dataset contains measured and derived data from MRR instruments placed in four separate locations within the study region. The MRR is a Biral/Metek 24 GHz (K-band) vertically oriented Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FM-CW) radar that measures signal backscatter from which Doppler spectra, radar reflectivity, Doppler velocity, drop size distribution, rain rate, liquid water content, and path integrated attenuation are derived. Data were collected from October 31, 2014 through May 22, 2016, during OLYMPEX.
  • GPM-GV United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Soil Moisture Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) dataset. A total of 15 stations were deployed near the South Fork River in North Central Iowa. The soil moisture probes measure hourly instantaneous measurements of the real dielectric permittivity, soil temperature, bulk electrical conductivity, and volumetric soil moisture. This dataset also consists of precipitation amount, air temperature, relative humidity, vapor pressure, wind speed, wind direction, and solar radiation measurements. Data were collected from April 17, 2013 through June 4, 2013, during the IFloodS Field Experiment.


NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) added new data from Special Sensor Microwave Imager / Sounder (SSMIS) data from the F16 platform to the Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program Calibrated Enhanced-Resolution Passive Microwave Daily EASE-Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperature Earth System Data Record (ESDR).
Version 1 of the NASA Suomi-NPP Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Snow Cover 6-Min Swath 375m (VNP10) dataset is now available at NSIDC DAAC. The VIIRS snow cover algorithm has been specifically designed to be compatible with Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Terra and Aqua Version 6 snow cover datasets, to ensure continuity between the products and facilitate a climate-data record from the three sensors.
On 7 July, NASA's Socioeconomic Data Applications Center (SEDAC) released the Global Population Count Grid Time Series Estimates dataset and the Global Population Density Grid Time Series Estimates for beta testing. These datasets provide a consistent time series of population distribution (count and density) over 3 decades (years 1970, 1980, 1990, and 2000), backcast from the year 2000. The datasets were produced as an input into another SEDAC dataset, Global Estimated Net Migration Grids by Decade: 1970-2000.
