GHRC DAAC

NASA's Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has published three Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation (GPM-GV) Rain Gauge datasets, 2 from the Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) campaign and 1 from the Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx). The OLYMPEX Rain Gauge datasets contain data gathered during 2015-2016 on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The IPHEx Rain Gauge dataset contains data during Spring 2014 from multiple sites of the Southern Appalachian region of North Carolina. All datasets collected precipitation amounts and the OLYMPEX datasets additionally calculated the precipitation rates.

GHRC DAAC has published three Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation (GPM-GV) Duke Parsivel Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology EXperiment (IPHEx) dataset

The Duke University researchers placed Parsivel Disdrometers at 13 sites during IPHEx in the Southern Appalachian region of North Carolina. This network of 13 disdrometer locations were used for measurements of precipitation drop size and drop velocity. Data were collected from May 1, 2014 through June 30, 2014.

GHRC DAAC has published the Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation (GPM-GV) Autonomous Parsivel Unit (APU) Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) dataset. The dataset consists of data collected by 16 APUs. The APU is an optical laser-disdrometer based on single particle extinction that measures particle size and fall velocity. It consists of the Parsivel2 developed by OTT in Germany and supporting hardware developed by University of Alabama. This APU dataset provides precipitation data including precipitation amount, precipitation rate, reflectivity in Rayleigh regime, liquid water content, drop diameter, and drop concentration. Data were collected were during the OLYMPEX field campaign held at Washington's Olympic Peninsula during the intense observation period of January 1, 2015 through January 1 2016.

GHRC DAAC has published the following datasets from the Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation (GPM-GV) program:

  • GPM-GV Airborne Precipitation Radar 3rd Generation (APR-3) The Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) dataset. This dataset provides radar reflectivity, doppler velocity for all bands, linear depolarization ratio at Ku-band, and normalized radar cross section measurements at Ka and Ku-bands. Ku-band, Ka-band and W-band frequency doppler measurements were made from the DC-8 aircraft at 10km altitude.
  • GPM-GV National Center for Atmospheric Research Particle Probes The Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology EXperiment (IPHEx) dataset consists of Ice Water Content (IWC), particle concentration normalized by bin width, and total particle concentration data that were collected from three instruments on the University of North Dakota (UND) Citation aircraft during the IPHEx campaign from May 9, 2014 to June 12, 2014.

This collection contains DMS camera calibration summary reports in PDF format for missions flown over Antarctica and Greenland.

NASA IceBridge BGM-3 Gravimeter L2 Geolocated Free Air Anomalies replacement data are now available from NSIDC DAAC. On May 31, 2017 the entire data collection was replaced to correct erroneous data found in Column 6 (GRV) for some of the lines. This dataset contains free air anomalies measurements taken over Antarctica using the BGM-3 Gravimeter.

The Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Greenland Ice Velocity: Selected Glacier Site Velocity Maps from interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) dataset at NSIDC DAAC has been updated with velocity maps for 2016. This release, Version 1.2, includes new browse images, metadata files, and more descriptive file names, and fills in some missing 2015 files.

NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) Common Metadata Repository (CMR) project team completed an effort to update and consolidate collection-level metadata export to CMR with single service. With this release, all collection-level metadata for datasets managed within ECS are being exported to CMR using ISO 19115. This project accomplished both a reconciliation of metadata in CMR as well as an improvement to metadata export services and workflows. Included in this phase of work was the transition to the new Earth Science Data Type (ESDT) process, which enables the DAAC to locally generate ESDTs from metadata contained in CMR. The new ESDT process will reduce the time to ingest new data products into ECS.

NASA IceBridge High Capability Radar Sounder (HiCARS) 2 L1B Time-Tagged Echo Strength Profiles data are now available from NSIDC DAAC. This dataset contains Antarctica echo strength profiles from the HiCARS Version 2 instrument.

The MEaSUREs Greenland Image Mosaics from Sentinel-1A and 1B, Version 1 dataset is now available at NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This dataset, part of NASA's Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program, provides 6 and 12-day 50 m resolution image mosaics of the Greenland coastline and ice sheet periphery. The mosaics are derived from C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (C-SAR) acquired by the Sentinel-1A and 1B imaging satellites, between January 2015 and April 2017.

ORNL DAAC

NASA's Oak Ridge National Laboratory DAAC (ORNL DAAC) published the following datasets to its online archive:

  • Pre-Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (Pre-ABoVE): Land Cover and Vegetation Map, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. ORNL DAAC, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA.
  • Daymet: Station-Level Inputs and Model Predicted Values for North America, Version 3. ORNL DAAC, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA.

ORNL DAAC published Snowmelt Timing Maps Derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) for North America, 2001-2015: This dataset provides snowmelt timing maps (STMs), cloud interference maps, and a map with the count of calculated snowmelt timing values for North America. The STMs are based on the MODIS standard 8-day composite snow-cover product MOD10A2 for the period 2001-01-01 to 2015-09-06. The STMs were created by conducting a time-series analysis of the MOD10A2 snow maps to identify the DOY of snowmelt on a per-pixel basis. Snowmelt timing (no-snow) was defined as a snow-free reading following two consecutive snow-present readings for a given 500-m pixel. The count of STM values is also reported, which represents the number of years on record in the STMs from 2001-2015.

ORNL DAAC published the Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) Global 0.5-deg Wetland Methane Emissions and Uncertainty (WetCHARTs v1.0) dataset: This dataset provides global monthly wetland methane (CH4) emissions and uncertainty data products derived from an ensemble of multiple terrestrial biosphere models, wetland extent scenarios, and CH4:C temperature dependencies. The data are at 0.5 by 0.5-degree resolution. Two model output data products are included in WetCHARTs v1.0: an output from the full ensemble for 2009-2010 and an output from a limited subset for 2001-2015. The intended use of the products is as a process-informed wetland CH4 emission and uncertainty dataset for atmospheric chemistry and transport modelling (WetCHARTs).

ORNL DAAC published the dataset Tree Mortality from Fires and Bark Beetles at 1-km Resolution, Western USA, 2003-2012. This dataset provides annual estimates of tree mortality due to fires and bark beetles from 2003 to 2012 on forestland in the continental western United States.

ORNL DAAC added several new products from The Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) datasets including: Vegetation Types and Physiographic Features, Kuparuk River Basin, Alaska; Arctic Vegetation Plots, Oumalik, Alaska, 1983-1985; Text Ignitions, burned area and emissions of fires in AK, YT, and NWT, 2001-2015.
