EOSDIS New Datasets: March 2017

ASDC

NASA's Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) promoted the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Subsetter UI Build 2.4.b2 to production. This release fixed bugs and added two new datasets: The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) FLASH Version 3C data and the SSF Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) FM5 Edition 1A data.

ASDC updated the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) announcement to reflect the instrument operational status of Laser A resuming full functionality on January 24, and the ability to collect science data and process the data fully from the Level 1 (L1)-L3 data in the TES Science Investigator-led Processing System (TES SIPS).

ASDC, in collaboration with the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Science team, released the CERES Energy Balanced and Filled Top-of-Atmosphere Edition 4.0 data product on March 10.

LP DAAC

NASA's Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) released the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Surface Reflectance (VNP09) Version 1 product suite on March 24, 2017. This product suite includes 500 meter, 1 kilometer, and 0.05 degree products at daily and 8-day temporal resolutions. The VNP09 collection historical processing is still ongoing and will eventually comprise all of the data from January 2012 to the present. In addition to the publicly available historical data, forward processing, ingest, and archive services for the recent data began on March 1, 2017. VIIRS global change observation products are being generated in a Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-like format using modified MODIS algorithms. NSIDC DAAC

NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) released the following Operation IceBridge datasets:

  • IceBridge ATM L1B Elevation and Return Strength data for Summer Arctic 2016 from NSIDC DAAC (see https://nsidc.org/data/ILATM1B/versions/2) this dataset contains spot elevation measurements of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, and Greenland, Antarctic Peninsula, and West Antarctic region ice surface acquired using the Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) instrumentation.
  • IceBridge ATM L2 Icessn Elevation, Slope, and Roughness data for the Arctic 2016 Summer campaign from NSIDC DAAC (see https://nsidc.org/data/ILATM2/) this dataset contains resampled and smoothed elevation measurements of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, and Greenland, Antarctic Peninsula, and West Antarctic region land ice surface acquired using the NASA ATM instrumentation.
  • NASA IceBridge UAF Lidar Scanner L1B Geolocated Surface Elevation Triplets data for 2016—this dataset contains scanning laser altimetry data points of Alaska Glaciers acquired using the airborne UAF Glacier lidar system
  • On March 8, the NASA IceBridge HiCARS 2 L2 Geolocated Ice Thickness data were replaced. The data files now include extensive header information, including field descriptions, campaign information, and data processing notes. In addition, Extensible Markup Language metadata files are now included with this dataset, which contains ice thickness, surface and bed elevation, and echo strength measurements taken over Antarctica using the High Capability Radar Sounder (HiCARS) instrument
  • The NASA IceBridge High Capability Radar Sounder (HiCARS) Level 2 (L2) Geolocated Ice Thickness data were replaced. The data files now include extensive header information, including field descriptions, campaign information, data processing notes, and eXtensible Markup Language (XML) metadata files. The dataset contains ice thickness, surface and bed elevation, and echo strength measurements taken over Antarctica using the HiCARS instrument.
  • The NASA IceBridge POS/AV L1B Corrected Position and Attitude Data for 2016 Antarctica dataset is now available and contains georeferencing data from the Applanix 510 POS/AV system flown with the Digital Mapping System (DMS) and other instruments over Greenland and Antarctica.
  • The Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) team added Special Sensor Microwave Imager/Sounder (SSMIS) data from the F8 and F13 platforms to the MEaSUREs Calibrated Enhanced-Resolution Passive Microwave Daily EASE-Grid 2.0 Brightness Temperature ESDR dataset. This addition extended the data’s temporal coverage to include July 9, 1987 through December 31, 1991 for the F8 platform and July 9, 1987 through October 4, 2011 for the F13 platform.
  • Version 2 of the MEaSUREs Antarctic Boundaries for IPY 2007-2009 from Satellite Radar is now available. The major changes in this version include the addition of basins (Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-Comparison Exercise 2016 and refined), and updated and expanded attribute lists. Other updates include the addition of new or missing ice shelves and ice risers, as well as the correction of various minor issues.
