Aral Sea, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

Image captured on 26 November 2021 by the MODIS instrument aboard the Terra satellite.

True-color corrected reflectance images of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, twenty years apart, where 30 November 2001 is on the left and 26 November 2021 is on the right. These images were acquired by Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradometer (MODIS), aboard the Terra satellite. The Aral Sea began shrinking in the 1960's due to water being diverted for irrigation projects.
